I will definitely be using this tool in future projects. It also makes it much easier to generate irregular shapes. I was really glad to have learned about this tool because it makes it very easy for me to translate ideas into SolidWorks sketches. I deleted the original image and was left with a sketch that accurately modeled my iPad sketch. I then selected the region surrounding the inscribed heart design so that the software would sketch the heart and once again adjust the image settings.

I adjusted the brightness, tolerance, and contrast of the image to achieve the best possible trace. Within the Autotrace add-in, I first selected the area around the outside of the tree for the software to trace. This feature would allow me to input an image into Solidworks and have SolidWorks convert the outlines of the image into a vector sketch. I learned that Solidworks has an “Autotrace” add-in feature. I then looked for the most optimal method to convert my sketch into a SolidWorks sketch.

My initial inspiration came from the 2-D metal jewelry tree I have at home. I looked around my house and thought about designs that could be formed using this pattern. I looked through designs on the internet as well as previous class projects and realized that I really liked the appearance of objects created using interesting planes of identical 2-D patterns. While laser cutting is commonly used in industrial manufacturing, it is also useful for creating artistic designs. This results in a cut that corresponds precisely with the input design. The laser head is moved in a programmed pattern based on the input design. It works by focusing an intense laser beam on the solid, causing it to vaporize at the point where the laser is focused. After searching it up and watching some YouTube tutorials, I learned that laser cutting is a technology used to precisely etch a solid material. Therefore, in some ways, the hardest part of the assignment was figuring out what laser cutting is and what it is used for. Prior to this project, I had never heard of laser cutting.
